Rudbeckia

 

Once again I am pleasantly pleased by this year's perennials that I put in last year. This week my "Double Decker" Rudbeckia 'Goldquelle' coneflower opened. This plant apparently won the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit for beauty & reliable garden performance. Out of the compact base foliage the stems have risen about 4 feet at least and on the tips are the three-inch large round fully double yellow pompoms. I am told if I deadhead the blooms when they are done, more flowers will persist through the fall and even beyond first frost. I think I will have to get more than just one of these plants for next year. Stay tuned for the next post on Rudbeckia - the "goldsturm" variety - which has been blooming for months now, but I have yet to get photos. (aka black eye susans) --
