There's a Storm Brewing!

Actually it brewed already and has moved on - a little thunder, a little lightening, a little wind and a shower .  I love these kinds of storms!!!  Weird weather - lots of fog now.

Amazing Spiderless Webs

As much as I don't really like spiders, I remain in awe of their web building talent.  This week turned out to be web-week.  I truly have never seen so many spider webs; they are everywhere you turn - even on the grass!!!  Not sure where the spiders are, but just as well, I don't care to see them.

Woolly Caterpillars

It's that time of year again, when the woolly caterpillars are out and about.  There are a couple of varieties this year - I know the first one below will become a tiger moth next spring, but I am not sure about the second one.  I haven't identified it yet.

2013's September Morning Harvest

2013 has been a very strange year for vegetable gardening, at least on our part of Bowen Island. Perhaps it was the cool wet spring. Nothing was consistent. The lettuce was abundant and really early, but the germination of everything else was really slow or non existent. Chris had to sow his beans and peas two or three times. The peas never did take, and while the beans finally did come, they produced only a few meals worth. Tomatoes were fantastic, and I think it was due to the lack of rain all July and August which allowed them to mature. Strawberries were poor, but raspberries amazing. Apples only on one tree, but they are sorry looking; we did harvest a small bowl of Italian plums. Leaks and beets are ok, but the zucchini yielded 3. Cucumbers were great. This morning I harvested the following as seen below and starting from the left: beets, cucumber, tomato, peterpan squash, zucchini, plums and an apple. There is always next year!!!!

 I checked on our shiraz grapes and they seem to be ripening really well.  I tried one and it tastes nearly there.  I reckon we'll each get a small handful!!
