More May Flowers!

They say that April showers bring May flowers, but we had a very dry April, so our May flowers include summer blooms as well.  Pretty much everything is blooming and I don't know where to start.

Weigelia - I finally learned how to grow this awesome shrub, and it's in full bloom!
No garden should be without Clematis!
Rhodos, Rhodi - they are everywhere - purples, pinks, reds!!

Our Lupins are putting on their best show this spring, and the bees just love them!
My "perfect" plant - Meadow Rue, normally blooms late July so its ahead of schedule.
Siberian Iris are happy by the pond and look great all on their own.
The Beauty Bush always impresses us with its fountain-like spray of blossoms hanging over the pond.

Birds and Bees

A garden just isn't complete without birds and bees.  Ours has plenty of both.

May Flowers

We thought it would be a 5 year project but it indeed was 7.  Now that the perennial gardens are established there is not much to do but sit back and enjoy.  Oh how I love the garden! It's in my blood now, and its good for the soul.  What a great way to give something back to mother nature - planting seeds, planting trees, planting natural gardens.

I Wonder?

What could be better than gazing through a glass of wine?
Hmm.  Maybe gazing through a glass of pinot gris with a turkey sandwich on the side.

Creating Your Own Hummingbird Garden

I love hummingbirds and a goal when we bought our little island home was to have a garden that would attract hummers, bees and butterflies.  We’ve sure done it with the hummers and I want to believe that we have the happiest ones on the west side of the island.   The key ingredients are the right location, flowers and trees, as well as water, feeders, bugs and moss.

We can sit right among them and they are not afraid at all.  We have even had them land on our legs.  I just love these little critters.  With 3 feeders on the go, we are kept busy keeping them filled.

Hummers and Cats

Amazingly enough the kitties are not interested in the birds.  Hummers or finches - its more like TV for them.  They enjoy watching as much as we do.

Outside In or Inside Out?

Spring has Sprung!

Here on Bowen, warm weather for the past month or so has allowed us to turn our thoughts to gardening. Actually we've been at it for several weeks now and are basically done.  If you follow this blog of mine you will know in past years I've posted alot about the garden beginning to grow, but we are so far ahead now that I didn't want to rub it in!!  Admittedly we had the garden nanny help out for 2 days a week or so ago so all things are groomed and ready to grow.
Our cherry trees are in blossom and so are the apples and plum!

The Rufus hummers  (if you can spot it) are back in full force and I am encouraging more birds to nest nearby.
The bleeding hearts are in full dress, so it is surely spring.
The pond is tidied, the fountain back on, the fish are active, and my favorite chair is back in place.
Part of the trimmings this weekend uncovered old garden ornaments like this squirrel in the salal.
And, Oops - gypsy is live art - and she is fully out of hibernation as well.
I guess there is one thing to be said about perennials.  In the beginning its a lot of work, but once your garden is established, its really little work, and so much pleasure.

April Burn

What a weekend!  Not only was the weather great - but we were able to burn pretty much all our yard and trail trimmings before the burn deadline of April 15th.  Cutting back blackberries was number one on the list, and I have the arms now to prove the challenge.
Next was pulling out trail debris, and both Jake and Gypsy supervised the hard work!
At least 16 barrows full of clipping and trimming up in smoke in no time at all.
There is such a sense of satisfaction having it all done and able to sit back till next spring!

Venomous Prey!

Cats are hunters by nature and unfortunately not able to discriminate between string, snakes, harmful prey and  non- harmful  prey.   Gypsy is no exception.  She loves to play and  hunt and this weekend we did a lot of yard work and burning.  Somewhere along the line, while clearing brush and pulling debris out for the bonfire she managed to find a prize!
 A Garter snake!
Wow - I have never seen her so animated.  She was doing serious damage to the poor thing.
I simply had to rescue the Mr. Snake before it was too late. At first I thought it was actually just a shedded snake skin, but as I got closer, gosh, darn, if it didn't turn out to be a rubber snake I had bought years ago and placed on a rock near our back trail.  It must have been covered in leaves and soil for some time and then dug up on the weekend for Gypsy's enjoyment.  As I said, cats are not discriminating when it comes to hunting, and rubber snakes are not to be ignored.

What's It All About?

We all know that cats are great at entertaining themselves.  Our Gypsy is no different than the rest when it comes to  doing her own thing.   Today she took the opportunity to check out one of Chris's books.  While not quite the bibliophile yet, she is becoming quite interested in books. Very smart cat!

Room With a View

Jake has a comfy spot in the outdoor room which also serves as a vantage point to spy on me through the open blinds on the bedroom window door.  Clever boy!

Of Cats and Skunks!

Image result for pepe le pew catForget what you remember about the unrequited love affair between those old Looney Tunes characters Pepe le Pew and Penelope Pussycat.   I'm here to tell you that Skunks and Cats just do NOT mix!

Last week will surely go down as being one of the worst in 2016.  Our lovely Smoke got skunked in the early hours of Tuesday morning.  I woke around 1am to that wretched skunk smell and cursed the fact that those odor-full pests have made it across the island to the west side.  I closed the bedroom window in hopes that the smell would soon dissipate, but strangely enough it only got worse, and to the point that my throat was burning.  For a minute I thought perhaps one had come through the doggie door and had sprayed inside the house.
I noticed Smoke on the stool at the foot of the bed and thought surely he couldn’t have been skunked.  I smelled him but the room smelled so bad I couldn’t tell if it was him or not.  I tried to push him off the stool but he wouldn’t budge, so I threw him out the room, but he wanted back in.  I figured he had seen the skunk maybe and was afraid to go out.  Sleep was no longer an option so I got up and showered at 4:30am and went to work.
As it was, Chris called me later at work to let me know it was indeed Smoke who had been skunked. Crikey! What to do.??
Working and commuting do not lend themselves to accomplishing much in a small window of time in the evenings.  I managed to catch the vet before he closed and bought some skunk odor remover which was very effective on the furniture.
Smoke was banned from the house, and the doggy access closed, and I handled laundry and spray clean chores for 2 nights in a row.
I used the odor product on smoke but only on the surface of his coat as I could not stomach the idea of trying to actually bathe him. Spraying it on him just made him run out and hide.  Poor boy!   On Friday we let him back in, but still so stinky.  We felt bad for him since he is, after all, part of the family.   I arranged to take him to the groomer for a de-skunking bath on Sunday, and spent both Saturday and Sunday doing major fumigating, cleaning and laundry.

Our poor Smoke was not a happy camper during the bathing session.

He is now home and somewhat content.  He smells lovely, though still a hint of skunk around his face and ears but hardly noticeable. He's lost his spark though. We do hope that he has been educated by experience, and will stay clear of skunks!  I personally do not know if I could endure another episode like this past week.
